Oh my goodnplenty it’s the second Protofans giveaway
That’s right! It’s been nearly a year since our first giveaway, which was won by the magical redchapeau, so we figured it was about time for round two.
Two delicious items of Protomen merchandise: the almost-sold-out cassingle I Drove All Night, and the super rare first printing of Act I on vinyl, which we are giving away instead of selling for fat sacks of cash money on eBay.
And because two items hardly makes a decent giveaway, we’re also including all this stuff:
Two blind-box Japanese Rockman figurines
This Mega Man E-Tank energy drink, which you could use as a cocktail mixer
Two packets of New Super Mario Bros keychains & stickers
A can of X-Ray Vision from the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co
These Ghost Pepper Super Hot Candy Balls
Spicy Sriracha peas
Some fancy goddamn chocolate Pocky
Every Burger cookie snack
Dave’s Dark Chocolate Espresso Beans
Strawberry cream Hello Panda
So, here’s what you have to do if you want to win this bundle of wonderful: just reblog this post once. You can reblog it more times if you wish, but it won’t increase your chances of winning. We won’t be counting likes as entries and you don’t need to be following Protofans. We’ll cover shipping if you’re within the US, but international winners will need to be prepared to pay to ship their loot. If you’re attending PAX East, we’ll personally hand-deliver your prize. We reserve the right to disqualify anyone who seems to be cheating or is otherwise acting like a shitbird.
The winner will be chosen randomly on Monday, 18 March. If we can’t contact you, we’ll choose another winner, so make sure your ask box is open or include your email address when you reblog the post. Good luck!

Do you want to win some awesome shit? Probably.

Back in 2009, I joined this band called The Protomen. At the time, they sold small patches with the Makeup and Vanity Set album logo, which I used as the basis for a blown up, freehand stencil. Armed with silver spray paint and a Sharpie, I used this stencil (along with the little bot fella from one of our posters) to create my first bass drum head for the band. In typical Proto-fashion, it was destroyed within a year and retired to the confines of The Skyhammer. It has since resurfaced, and rather than letting it acquire further dust and damage, we figured we’d auction it off for charity, along with a pair of used drumsticks. Keep in mind that the head is tattered & torn, so you probably shouldn’t use it on a drum kit.. unless you care not for resonance and tone. (Other assorted Proto gear is also being auctioned within the link below. Or above, depending on format)

tl;dr: Buy my busted, old shit. For the kids.

    The Protomen

    jampak:

So I listened to Act 1 and Act 2, two albums by the Protomen last night. I’m re-listening to them now. I’ve had a handful of thoughts about them, and just wanted to ramble on for a while.

First off, it’s important for me to say that the Protomen do a lot of simple, small things to define themselves. Through their two albums they tell a damn good story, for one, and they manage to avoid the limits that some other great narrative musicians placed upon themselves (like The Decemberists, Coheed & Cambria), for two.

To me, the plastic colors, and iconic adventure of Megaman is a tired topic on its own, and if you boil the elements down, The Protomen tell a very typical action-revenge story—at least in the first album. But the Protomen take individual elements that are nothing special, and build an awesome machine out of them. In a nutshell, I suppose that’s a good summary of why I think their story is excellent.

And another great thing that the Protomen manage to do is to spotlight their story. I feel like a lot of the story-telling musicians tend to overbalance toward creating pop-hits that will sell well, and as a result the story falls flat. But it seems to me that The Protomen write their music to tell the story, and I find that incredible.

I was especially shaken with the convention of including paragraphs to read alongside the music, and the fact that appropriate interludes are arranged to allow one to keep up with both lyrics and reading (the music always complements what you’re reading very nicely, by the way) just goes to show how important the story is. This is the first time I’ve seen something like this, and it’s so obviously a cool idea. Why have I never been exposed to something as awesome from another group? Has this been done before?

I’m getting a little tired at the moment, so I’m going to take a break from rambling (do you guys even like this critical stuff?), but I’d like talk about the differences between the first and second albums, the symbolism that I noticed as I am a great lover of symbols, the story that is told, and other stray thoughts.

    Yes, this post. Agreed 110%

Also if you’re interested in another example of the inclusion of paragraphs to read alongside the music, I suggest picking up 2112 by Rush. The title track is a multi-part prog rock arrangement, with a grandiose sci-fi story backing it up, and I’m pretty sure it is something that greatly influenced the Protomen.

Alright, this is done for now. Sorry for posting a million WIPs, but I’m just SUPER proud of how it turned out. I might go back and tinker with it later, especially shading/color stuff, but for right now I’m just gonna call it a job well done.
